WestJet is expanding its winter 2026–2027 schedule with five new non-stop routes to popular sun destinations in Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, further strengthening its position as Canada’s leading leisure airline.
The new services include the airline’s first-ever flights between Calgary and Mérida, Mexico, alongside new links connecting Winnipeg, Regina and Ottawa with popular Caribbean and Central American destinations.
Five New Winter Routes
WestJet will introduce the following weekly services during the 2026–2027 winter season:
- Calgary (YYC) – Mérida (MID): weekly from 17 December 2026.
- Regina (YQR) – San José del Cabo (SJD): weekly from 14 December 2026.
- Winnipeg (YWG) – Punta Cana (PUJ): weekly from 28 November 2026.
- Winnipeg (YWG) – Belize City (BZE): weekly from 14 December 2026.
- Ottawa (YOW) – Liberia (LIR): weekly from 20 December 2026.
The Calgary–Mérida route will be the only non-stop service linking Western Canada with Mérida, the capital of Mexico’s Yucatán state.
Expanding Sun Destination Network
John Weatherill, Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer at WestJet, said the new routes respond to growing demand for winter leisure travel.
“These additions support the growing demand for options in Mexico and the Latin Caribbean while sustainably expanding our schedule and managing our fleet during the peak winter travel season,” he said.
WestJet said it will serve 50 sun destinations from 15 Canadian cities during the peak winter season, more than any other Canadian airline. The carrier also plans to increase capacity on several returning routes, with further announcements expected in the coming weeks.
Sunwing Vacations Adds Holiday Packages
Sunwing Vacations, part of the WestJet Group, also announced new and returning vacation packages for the winter season, which runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027.
The operator will offer holiday packages to:
- Punta Cana from Winnipeg, beginning 4 November 2026.
- Roatán, Honduras, from Québec City, beginning 14 December 2026.
- Liberia, Costa Rica, from Ottawa, beginning 20 December 2026.
Vacation packages to Punta Cana from Winnipeg and Roatán from Québec City previously operated in 2025 and are returning for the upcoming winter season.
Strengthening Tourism Connections
Airport authorities and tourism organisations across Canada, Mexico, Belize and Costa Rica welcomed the expansion, highlighting the importance of improved air connectivity in supporting tourism growth.
The new services reinforce WestJet’s position as Canada’s largest airline serving Mexico by number of flights and the leading Canadian carrier to both Belize and Liberia, Costa Rica.
