WestJet Returns To Glasgow With New Direct Toronto Flights

Glasgow Airport has celebrated the launch of WestJet’s new direct service to Toronto Pearson International Airport, marking the Canadian airline’s return to Scotland’s largest city for the first time since 2022.

The route will operate four times per week using Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and is expected to significantly strengthen transatlantic connectivity between Scotland and Canada.

The inaugural flight departed following a ceremonial send-off from Glasgow Airport’s airfield team as passengers boarded the first service bound for Toronto.

The Canadian city serves as both a major North American destination and a key hub for onward travel across Canada through WestJet’s wider network.

Scotland And Canada Share Strong Tourism And Cultural Ties

Airport officials highlighted the importance of Canada as one of Scotland’s leading international tourism markets.

Canadian visitors spent approximately £135 million in Scotland during 2024, while an estimated 4.8 million Canadians claim Scottish ancestry.

The new service is expected to support both leisure and business travel while strengthening long-standing economic, cultural and family connections between the two countries.

WestJet Strengthens Glasgow Partnership

Chris Tibbett, Executive Director of Commercial, Aviation and Marketing for AGS Airports, described the launch as an important milestone for Glasgow Airport.

“Today’s inaugural flight to Toronto marks an important milestone for Glasgow Airport and underlines the strength of the relationship between Scotland and Canada,” Tibbett said.

He added that WestJet’s return demonstrates strong demand for direct transatlantic travel between the two countries and supports tourism, trade and investment opportunities.

Tibbett also noted that the timing of the route is significant as Glasgow prepares to host the Commonwealth Games later this year.

WestJet Highlights Scottish Diaspora Connections

WestJet said the route reflects growing demand for stronger links between Canada and Scotland.

“Canada is home to a proud Scottish Diaspora, with deep-rooted ties that are built on shared heritage, culture and community,” said Jared Mikoch-Gerke, WestJet Director of Airport Affairs and Alliances.

He said the airline aims to strengthen historic connections between the two countries while supporting future generations of travellers.

City Leaders Welcome New International Link

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken welcomed the launch, describing Canada as an important overseas market for the city.

She said the new route will make it easier for tourists and business travellers to access Glasgow while also supporting inward investment and international connectivity.

“Congratulations to our partners at Glasgow Airport and to WestJet for recognising Glasgow’s standing as a world-class and globally connected city,” Aitken said.

The return of WestJet’s Toronto service further expands Glasgow Airport’s long-haul network as demand for direct transatlantic travel continues recovering strongly.
