JetBlue has emerged as the winning bidder for 22 takeoff and landing slots formerly owned by Spirit Airlines at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, marking a significant step in the carrier’s plans to expand at one of the United States’ busiest airports.
According to a court filing, JetBlue submitted a winning bid of $58.5 million for the slots, narrowly beating Frontier Airlines, which offered $57.5 million as the alternate bidder.
Court Approval Pending
The sale remains subject to court approval, with a hearing scheduled for 22 July. If the court does not approve the transaction or JetBlue is unable to complete the purchase under the agreed bidding procedures, Frontier Airlines would acquire the slots as the backup bidder.
The auction follows Spirit Airlines’ decision to cease operations on 2 May as the ultra-low-cost carrier moves through the liquidation of its assets.
Expansion Plans at LaGuardia
While JetBlue has not publicly commented on the auction results, an internal company memo seen by CNBC indicated the airline plans to relocate its LaGuardia operations to Terminal A.
Any expansion made possible by the additional slots is not expected to begin until 2027.
Strategic Opportunity
LaGuardia is one of the most slot-constrained airports in the United States, making takeoff and landing rights highly valuable. Acquiring the former Spirit slots would give JetBlue greater flexibility to expand its schedule and strengthen its presence in the important New York market.
The outcome of the court hearing will determine whether the transaction can proceed and whether JetBlue will secure the additional operating rights at the airport.
