K2 Airways Cargo Plane Missing Off Pakistan After Navigation Failure

Pakistani authorities have launched a large-scale search and rescue operation after a K2 Airways cargo Boeing 737 disappeared over the Arabian Sea while flying from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Karachi.

The aircraft, carrying five crew members, reported a navigation system problem shortly before losing radio and radar contact at approximately 9:21 p.m. local time on Tuesday, according to the Pakistan Airports Authority.

The Boeing 737 freighter had departed Sharjah for Karachi when the crew notified air traffic controllers of the navigational issue. Authorities said the aircraft was approximately 155 nautical miles (287 kilometres) west of Karachi when communication was lost.

Aircraft Rapidly Descended Before Disappearing

Radar data indicated the aircraft made a rapid heading change and descended moments before disappearing from radar sharply. Flight tracking data also showed an unusually steep rate of descent before the signal was lost over the Arabian Sea.

The missing aircraft, registered AP-BOI, is a Boeing 737 freighter operated by Karachi-based K2 Airways, a private cargo airline founded in 2018. The airline said it is fully cooperating with the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and other government agencies involved in the investigation and search efforts.

Search and Rescue Operation Continues

The Pakistan Airports Authority activated the country’s Rescue Coordination Center immediately after contact was lost. The search operation involves the Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force, civilian agencies and merchant vessels operating in the area, although rough monsoon conditions have complicated the search.

K2 Airways identified the five crew members on board and said it remains hopeful while authorities continue searching for the aircraft. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed condolences to the families and directed all available resources to support the operation.

The cause of the disappearance remains unknown. Aviation authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation once the aircraft is located.
