Deutsche Bahn Invests €50 Million to Improve Delay Alerts

Deutsche Bahn is investing an additional €50 million in a new passenger information programme aimed at improving communication about train delays, cancellations and platform changes across Germany.

The initiative, called Better Customer Communication, will introduce new IT systems, artificial intelligence and upgraded station displays to ensure passengers receive travel updates more quickly and accurately.

AI Assistant to Provide Real-Time Updates

A key feature of the programme is Kiana, a new AI-powered virtual assistant that will provide passengers with real-time information on delays and cancellations through the DB Navigator app and Deutsche Bahn’s website.

Available around the clock, Kiana will support more than 100 languages, making travel information more accessible for both domestic and international passengers.

Deutsche Bahn also plans to significantly reduce the time it takes to communicate urgent platform changes. The railway operator said updates that currently take around one minute to appear in the DB Navigator app will be delivered in approximately two seconds under the new system.

7,000 New Information Displays

As part of the investment, around 7,000 new digital passenger information displays will be installed at railway stations across Germany, including smaller regional stations that currently have limited real-time information.

The improvements are intended to help passengers react more quickly to operational disruptions and make transfers easier during periods of network congestion.

Infrastructure Challenges Remain

Despite the investment, Deutsche Bahn acknowledged that major operational challenges remain, particularly in the planning and delivery of infrastructure projects.

Chief Executive Evelyn Palla cited the modernisation of the Nuremberg–Regensburg railway line as an example. The route, which was expected to reopen on Friday following engineering works, will now remain closed until 31 July because safety inspections have taken longer than anticipated.

The new customer communication programme forms part of Deutsche Bahn’s broader efforts to improve passenger satisfaction while continuing extensive upgrades to Germany’s rail infrastructure.
