Hilton has expanded its lifestyle portfolio in Iceland with the opening of Skáld Akureyri, Curio Collection by Hilton, a design-led boutique hotel inspired by the country’s rich literary heritage.
Located on historic Hafnarstræti in the centre of Akureyri, the new property features 71 guestrooms and 15 serviced apartments, blending contemporary Nordic design with references to Iceland’s traditions of poetry, storytelling and craftsmanship.
Inspired by Icelandic Storytelling
The hotel’s name, Skáld, meaning “poet” in Icelandic, reflects the property’s design concept. Interiors incorporate handcrafted Nordic materials, bespoke artwork and literary influences throughout guestrooms and public spaces, creating a strong connection to the culture of North Iceland.
The serviced apartments include fully equipped kitchens, spacious living areas and private balconies, catering to both short and extended stays.
“Skáld Akureyri has been created as more than a place to stay – it is a house rooted in Akureyri, inspired by Icelandic poetry, and shaped by the surrounding landscape,” said General Manager Magnea Þórey Hjálmarsdóttir.
Nordic Dining and Rooftop Views
The hotel’s signature restaurant, Abba-labba-lá, serves contemporary Nordic cuisine centred on seasonal Icelandic ingredients sourced from local producers.
Additional guest facilities include a fitness centre and two rooftop terraces designed for dining, drinks, private events and panoramic views across Akureyri, Eyjafjörður fjord and the surrounding mountains.

Gateway to North Iceland
Skáld Akureyri is positioned as a base for exploring some of North Iceland’s best-known attractions, including the Diamond Circle scenic route, whale-watching excursions, ski areas, the midnight sun during summer and the Northern Lights in winter.
The hotel is located just a three-minute walk from Akureyri town centre, with easy access to the waterfront, restaurants, shops and cultural attractions.
Akureyri can be reached by a 40-minute domestic flight from Reykjavík or by road via Iceland’s Ring Road. The nearby Akureyri Airport also offers an increasing number of international and seasonal flights.
Hilton Expands in Iceland
David Kelly, Senior Vice President for Continental Europe at Hilton, said the opening strengthens Curio Collection by Hilton’s presence in Europe while offering travellers a distinctive stay experience rooted in Icelandic culture and design.
Skáld Akureyri also participates in the Hilton Honors loyalty programme, providing members with benefits including discounted rates, complimentary Wi-Fi, Digital Check-In and Digital Key where available.
