The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating after a JetBlue pilot reported that the aircraft struck a drone while preparing to land at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
The incident occurred on June 29, 2026, during the aircraft’s final approach to the airport. Despite the reported collision, the flight landed safely without incident.
FAA Confirms Investigation
The FAA confirmed it had received a report of the suspected drone strike and has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have not yet released details about the aircraft involved, the exact location of the reported impact or whether the aircraft sustained any damage.
Growing Aviation Safety Concern
Drone activity near airports continues to pose a significant challenge for aviation safety. Unauthorised drone operations in controlled airspace can create serious risks for commercial aircraft, particularly during take-off and landing when pilots have limited ability to avoid obstacles.
Regulators in the United States and many other countries have introduced stricter rules governing drone operations near airports, including designated no-fly zones and mandatory registration requirements for many unmanned aircraft.
The FAA’s investigation will seek to determine whether a drone was involved and whether any aviation safety regulations were violated.
