Helsinki has unveiled Saunasaari, a new island attraction dedicated to Finland’s iconic sauna culture. Located just off the city’s Market Square, the island offers visitors an authentic Finnish wellness experience with a traditional smoke sauna, wood-fired hot tubs and swimming in the Baltic Sea.
Officially opened on June 26, Saunasaari is the only island in Helsinki where guests can enjoy a large traditional smoke sauna, one of the country’s oldest and most cherished sauna traditions.
Authentic Finnish Sauna Experience
Two wood-fired Finnish hot tubs, known as palju, are positioned along the waterfront, allowing visitors to alternate between the warmth of the tubs, the heat of the sauna and refreshing dips in the Baltic Sea.
According to the island’s founders, Nina and Riku Stenros, the project was created to introduce guests to the unique atmosphere of the Finnish archipelago while showcasing the country’s sauna heritage and hospitality.
Summer Evening Visits
Saunasaari is open every Friday and Saturday evening until August 8. Admission includes access to the smoke sauna, hot tubs and a barbecue dinner served at the island’s summer restaurant, RÖK.
The menu features whole smoked fish, grilled beef entrecôte and grilled summer cabbage for vegetarian guests, highlighting seasonal Nordic ingredients.
Available for Private Events
In addition to public sauna evenings, Saunasaari can also be reserved for private gatherings and special events, offering visitors an exclusive way to experience one of Finland’s most celebrated traditions in the heart of Helsinki’s archipelago.
