SAS has announced the largest investment in its 80-year history, committing to acquire up to 40 Airbus widebody aircraft as part of a long-term strategy to strengthen Scandinavia’s global connectivity and expand its long-haul network.
The investment includes new Airbus A330-900neo aircraft alongside additional Airbus A330-300s that will provide capacity before the next-generation fleet enters service. Valued at more than US$10 billion at list prices, the agreement represents the largest aircraft order ever placed by the Scandinavian carrier.
Major Fleet Renewal Underway
The new widebody order follows SAS’ record purchase of 55 Embraer E195-E2 regional aircraft announced last year and complements the ongoing renewal of its Airbus A320neo fleet. Together, the investments represent the airline’s most extensive fleet modernisation programme in decades.
The Airbus A330-900neo will offer lower fuel consumption, reduced noise levels and an enhanced passenger experience while maintaining high operational commonality with SAS’ existing Airbus A330-300 fleet.
“For 80 years, SAS has connected Scandinavia with the world and the world with Scandinavia. Today, we are investing in the next chapter of our story,” said Anko van der Werff, President and Chief Executive Officer of SAS.
He described the investment as a clear demonstration of the airline’s confidence in future demand and the importance of strong international connectivity for economic growth across Scandinavia.
Expansion Expected to Support Economic Growth
Alongside the fleet announcement, SAS released a new economic impact study examining the benefits of expanding operations at Copenhagen Airport by 2030.
The report estimates that the airline’s planned growth could support an additional 25,000 jobs and contribute approximately DKK 25 billion to Denmark’s gross domestic product by the end of the decade. Total employment supported by SAS would rise to around 64,000 jobs, while the airline’s overall contribution to GDP would increase to DKK 66 billion.
The analysis also forecasts approximately 4,000 additional jobs in southern Sweden, highlighting the wider economic impact across the Öresund region and Scandinavia.
Copenhagen Strengthens Role as Global Hub
SAS said the investment reinforces Copenhagen Airport’s position as the airline’s primary international hub, improving links between Scandinavia and destinations across Europe, North America and Asia.
The additional aircraft will provide flexibility to meet growing demand while expanding access to international markets for passengers and businesses throughout the region.
Sustainability Remains a Priority
As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, SAS also announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with SkyKraft to explore the future development of electric sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF).
The airline said the new Airbus A330-900neo fleet, combined with continued investment in renewable aviation fuels and operational efficiency, will support its ambition to deliver future growth while reducing environmental impact.
The announcement coincides with SAS’ 80th anniversary, marking a new phase in the airline’s strategy to strengthen Scandinavia’s connectivity and competitiveness through continued investment in modern aircraft and international route development.
