Sardinia Introduces Beach Limits And Reservations For Summer 2026

Sardinia has introduced a series of new restrictions for visitors this summer as authorities step up efforts to protect some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful beaches from overtourism.

The Italian island has implemented visitor caps, mandatory reservations and strict conservation measures at several of its most popular coastal destinations, aiming to preserve fragile ecosystems and reduce environmental damage caused by increasing tourist numbers.

Pink Beach Remains Off Limits

One of the island’s most famous beaches remains completely closed to visitors.

Located on Budelli Island in the La Maddalena archipelago, Spiaggia Rosa is renowned for its distinctive pink sand and is considered one of Italy’s most protected natural sites.

The beach has been closed to direct access since the mid-1990s after decades of visitors removing sand as souvenirs.

Tourists may only view the beach from boats at a distance. Walking on the sand can result in fines exceeding €500, while removing sand carries penalties of up to €3,500.

Daily Visitor Limits Introduced

Several beaches in the La Maddalena archipelago are operating under strict daily visitor quotas.

Cala Coticcio and Cala Brigantina are limited to just 60 visitors per day throughout the summer season.

Access requires advance online reservations, payment of a €3 fee, and participation in a guided visit accompanied by an authorized guide.

The measures are intended to minimize pressure on sensitive coastal environments while still allowing limited public access.

Reservations Required At Popular Beaches

Additional restrictions have been introduced at some of Sardinia’s busiest beaches.

Cala Brandinchi, often referred to as “Little Tahiti” because of its turquoise waters, is limited to 1,447 visitors per day between June 1 and September 30.

Nearby Lu Impostu can accommodate a maximum of 3,352 visitors daily during the same period.

Reservations for both beaches must be made through the San Teodoro app or dedicated booking platform before arrival.

Cala Mariolu Also Restricts Numbers

On Sardinia’s eastern coast, Cala Mariolu has introduced a daily limit of 700 visitors.

The beach is considered one of the island’s most spectacular destinations and regularly appears on lists of Europe’s best beaches.

Officials hope the restrictions will help preserve its white pebbles, crystal-clear waters and surrounding marine ecosystem.

Protecting Sardinia’s Natural Heritage

The new regulations form part of a broader effort to balance tourism growth with environmental protection.

Sardinia consistently ranks among Italy’s most popular summer destinations, attracting millions of visitors each year to its beaches, nature reserves and coastal villages.

By limiting visitor numbers and introducing stricter controls, local authorities hope to ensure that the island’s most famous beaches remain preserved for future generations while continuing to welcome tourists in a more sustainable way.
