IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced the signing of Hotel Indigo Stockholm – Kvarnholmen, marking the debut of its Hotel Indigo brand in Sweden. The new hotel will be developed by Kvarnholmen Utveckling, a joint venture between Peab and JM, and operated by 1912 Hotels under a franchise agreement with IHG.
The signing represents another step in IHG’s expansion strategy across Northern Europe and strengthens its growing Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio in the Nordic region. Scheduled to open in 2029, the property will become the first Hotel Indigo hotel in Sweden and one of the most distinctive lifestyle hospitality projects currently planned for the Stockholm market.
Waterfront Location Set To Become A New Stockholm Hospitality Destination
The hotel will be located in Kvarnholmen, a rapidly developing waterfront district in Nacka on Stockholm’s eastern shoreline. Once known for its industrial roots, the neighbourhood is undergoing a major transformation into a vibrant urban area that combines modern Scandinavian architecture with historical character.
Its location offers convenient access to Stockholm city centre, the archipelago and a growing collection of cultural attractions, restaurants and leisure experiences. The district has emerged as one of the capital’s most ambitious redevelopment projects, creating a strong foundation for future tourism and hospitality growth.
Hotel Indigo’s concept is closely tied to the character of each neighbourhood in which it operates. Every property is designed to reflect local culture, architecture, food and community influences, creating a unique experience rather than a standardised hotel offering.
232-Room Hotel To Feature Rooftop Pool, Spa And Meeting Facilities
Upon opening, Hotel Indigo Stockholm – Kvarnholmen will offer 232 guest rooms alongside a range of lifestyle-focused amenities. Plans include a restaurant and bar, wellness and recreational facilities, meeting spaces covering 150 square metres and a variety of social gathering areas.
The development will also include a rooftop pool and terrace overlooking the waterfront, spa and fitness facilities, and an internal atrium featuring green space designed to support both guest wellbeing and community engagement.
The project aims to combine premium hospitality with a strong connection to the surrounding neighbourhood, aligning with the Hotel Indigo brand’s emphasis on local storytelling and design-led experiences.
IHG Targets Continued Nordic Expansion
According to IHG, the signing reflects growing demand for high-quality lifestyle accommodation across the Nordic region. The company continues to see significant opportunities for expansion across multiple brands as both international and domestic travel activity remains strong.
Hotel Indigo has surpassed 325 open and pipeline properties worldwide and continues to expand into new markets. The addition of Stockholm strengthens the brand’s presence across Europe and introduces its neighbourhood-focused hospitality concept to Swedish travellers for the first time.
For IHG, the project also deepens its relationship with 1912 Hotels while establishing new partnerships with Peab and JM. Industry leaders involved in the development have highlighted the combination of the waterfront setting, local character and international brand recognition as key factors behind the project’s appeal.
Growing Presence In Sweden And The Nordics
The future Hotel Indigo Stockholm – Kvarnholmen will join IHG’s expanding portfolio in Sweden, which includes voco Stockholm – Kista and the recently opened Ruby Frida in Stockholm. The latest signing further supports the company’s strategy to increase its footprint across the Nordic countries, where it currently has 13 open and pipeline properties.
As Stockholm continues to attract international visitors and investment, the arrival of Hotel Indigo is expected to add a new lifestyle accommodation option to the city’s hospitality landscape while showcasing the evolving identity of the Kvarnholmen waterfront district.
