KLM has cancelled flights to and from Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport after new international travel restrictions linked to the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa created operational challenges for airlines serving the region.
The Dutch carrier said the cancellations were not due to active Ebola risks in Entebbe itself but rather because of tightening entry requirements affecting passengers and crew travelling through East and Central Africa.
The disruption highlights how public health measures are increasingly reshaping international aviation networks as governments respond to growing concerns surrounding the outbreak.
KLM Cancels Entebbe Flights Amid Travel Restrictions
The airline confirmed that scheduled services between Amsterdam and Entebbe, operating via Kigali, were cancelled as restrictions imposed by multiple countries complicated normal operations.
KLM said it continues monitoring developments while assessing options for future services.
“We’re continuing to monitor the situation and looking into what’s possible,” the airline said in a travel advisory.
While Entebbe itself is not currently classified as an active Ebola risk zone, passengers travelling through the airport increasingly face additional screening requirements and entry limitations.
WHO Raises Highest International Alert Level
The operational disruption follows the World Health Organization’s decision to declare the Ebola outbreak affecting Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The outbreak has been associated with the relatively rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
Although the WHO elevated the outbreak to its highest international alert category, officials stopped short of declaring a pandemic emergency.
Governments have nevertheless responded by introducing stricter public health controls for travelers arriving from affected regions.
US Restrictions Create Problems For Airlines
Recent measures introduced by the United States have become particularly challenging for international carriers operating across East and Central Africa.
Enhanced screening procedures, entry requirements and public health rules introduced in May have complicated crew scheduling and route planning.
Brussels Airlines recently warned that crew members who had travelled through Uganda or the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the previous 21 days could face restrictions entering the United States.
As a result, airlines increasingly face logistical challenges balancing regional services with long-haul international operations.

The outbreak’s impact is now extending well beyond routes directly serving affected countries.
Air France experienced operational disruption in May after a flight travelling from Paris to Detroit diverted to Montreal following reports involving a passenger linked to travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Such incidents highlight how health emergencies can quickly influence airline operations far beyond the outbreak zone itself.
