Glasgow Airport has officially welcomed the first Edelweiss flight from Zurich, marking the launch of a new direct air connection between Scotland and Switzerland as airlines continue expanding European leisure networks.
The inaugural flight arrived on Friday, 29 May, introducing a twice-weekly service designed to improve travel options for both Scottish passengers heading to Switzerland and inbound visitors traveling to Scotland.
The route creates a new direct connection between Glasgow and one of Europe’s most important aviation hubs while strengthening the airport’s international network ahead of the summer season.
New Zurich Route Launches For Summer 2026
The seasonal service will operate twice per week every Monday and Friday until 14 September 2026.
The route provides passengers with direct access to Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city and one of Europe’s strongest aviation gateways.
Airport executives say the launch represents another step in expanding international connectivity from Scotland while increasing travel choice for passengers across the region.
“We’re proud to celebrate the arrival of Edelweiss’ first flight from Zurich, marking the successful launch of this exciting new route,” said Chris Tibbett, Executive Director of Commercial Aviation and Marketing.
Direct Access To Switzerland And Beyond
Zurich remains one of Europe’s most important transit hubs, offering connections across Switzerland, continental Europe and long-haul international destinations.
For leisure travelers, the city also provides access to lakeside attractions, historic districts and transport links into the Swiss Alps.
The direct service removes the need for connecting flights, creating faster access for Scottish travelers planning both city breaks and mountain holidays.
Boost For Scottish Tourism
The route is also expected to support inbound travel by making Glasgow and western Scotland more accessible to Swiss visitors.
Tourism officials increasingly view direct international air services as essential for growing overseas visitor numbers and extending tourism beyond traditional peak periods.
The airport believes the new connection could strengthen business travel and leisure demand simultaneously.
Partnership With Lufthansa Group Continues To Expand
The new service further strengthens Glasgow Airport’s relationship with Lufthansa Group airlines as airports increasingly rely on partnerships to improve international connectivity.
Airport executives hope strong summer demand could create opportunities for future growth beyond the initial seasonal schedule.
“Zurich is not only a vibrant city in its own right but also an important gateway to the wider Swiss network and beyond,” Tibbett said.
European Leisure Routes Continue Growing
The launch reflects a broader trend across European aviation, where airlines continue adding point-to-point leisure routes while capitalizing on strong demand for direct travel.
For Scottish travelers, the new service creates easier access to Switzerland.
For Glasgow Airport, it represents another addition to an increasingly competitive international route network designed to keep passengers flying directly rather than connecting elsewhere.
