Lufthansa 777-9 Completes First Test Flight

Lufthansa’s first Boeing 777-9 has successfully completed its maiden flight, marking another major milestone for Boeing’s long-delayed 777X programme.

The aircraft completed a three-hour and 27-minute test flight over the U.S. states of Washington and Oregon before landing at Paine Field.

First Lufthansa Aircraft With Full Passenger Cabin

Unlike earlier Boeing 777X test aircraft fitted with temporary cabin interiors, Lufthansa’s aircraft features a fully installed passenger cabin including Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy seating.

The aircraft also includes operational inflight entertainment systems and other cabin components that will now undergo certification and performance testing.

Boeing said the aircraft performed as expected during the flight, which was conducted by test pilots Ted Grady and Jake Miller.

Next Phase Of Certification Testing Begins

The aircraft will now enter a new stage of ground and flight testing focused heavily on cabin systems, connectivity and passenger-related operational performance.

According to Boeing, the aircraft will later receive full Lufthansa exterior branding before eventually entering commercial service.

Lufthansa is currently expected to receive delivery of the aircraft in 2027.

777X Programme Continues After Delays

The Boeing 777X programme has faced several years of delays linked to certification requirements, technical issues and production challenges.

Boeing said the overall 777X test programme has now accumulated more than 4,700 flight-test hours.

The Lufthansa aircraft becomes the sixth Boeing 777-9 to fly and will support additional certification work alongside Boeing’s dedicated test fleet.

Lufthansa Remains Key Launch Customer

Lufthansa is one of the launch customers for the Boeing 777X family, which includes the passenger-focused 777-9 and 777-8 models, as well as the Boeing 777-8 Freighter.

According to Boeing, the 777X programme has secured more than 620 orders worldwide as airlines continue preparing for future long-haul fleet renewal.
