Maldives Unveils Ultra-Luxury Private Island Concept with “Nowhere” Experience

A new level of ultra-luxury is arriving in the Maldives, where a bold twin-island concept is redefining private travel with the upcoming debut of “Nowhere” – an entirely bookable private island designed for total seclusion.

The project, known as .Here, launched in December in the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with its first island, “Somewhere,” already welcoming guests. Now, attention turns to its most exclusive component yet – Nowhere – which is set to open as a full buyout experience aimed at high-net-worth travelers seeking complete privacy.

Located next to Finolhu, a Seaside Collection Resort, the concept introduces a new approach to Maldivian luxury: fewer residences, more space, and highly personalized service across two natural islands. The idea behind the unconventional names came spontaneously, according to General Manager Steven Phillips, who revealed they were придуманы “over three Negronis.”

Together, Somewhere and Nowhere host just nine residences, positioning the development at the extreme end of boutique luxury. The design philosophy centers on understated elegance combined with a sense of playfulness, all set within one of the most pristine marine environments in the Indian Ocean.

Somewhere Island, which opened in December, features seven expansive residences, both beachfront and overwater. Each villa is among the largest in the Maldives, starting at over 1,200 square metres. The properties include suspended infinity pools, multiple indoor and outdoor living spaces, and private butler service known as a “Roohu” – meaning “soul” in Dhivehi.

Five of the residences offer three bedrooms and accommodate up to eight adults, while two larger villas expand to four bedrooms and up to 1,400 square metres, designed for families or group travel.

The upcoming Nowhere Island takes exclusivity further. The entire island must be booked as a single experience, effectively transforming it into a private retreat for one group. At its core is a five-bedroom Presidential Residence spanning more than 2,400 square metres, complemented by a three-bedroom overwater villa with its own pool.

In total, Nowhere can host up to 24 adults, blending beachfront and overwater living with dedicated wellness areas and watersports facilities tailored to the group’s preferences.

The concept reflects a broader shift in luxury travel, where affluent guests increasingly prioritize privacy, personalization and multi-generational experiences over traditional resort stays. According to Phillips, key markets are expected to include the Middle East, Russia and the United States.

With its playful naming and serious approach to exclusivity, the Nowhere and Somewhere concept signals a new direction for the Maldives – one where luxury is not just about location, but complete control over the experience.
