Some pieces transcend trends and become cultural touchstones. Nearly 30 years after Princess Diana made Virgin Atlantic’s navy “Fly Virgin Atlantic” sweatshirt an off-duty icon, the airline is bringing the design back – this time with a charitable mission at its core.
Timed to the 30th anniversary of Diana’s now-legendary appearance in November 1995, the reissued sweatshirt pays homage to the original with meticulous attention to detail. An initial run of just 250 jumpers will be released exclusively via Retail Therapy online, positioning the piece firmly as a collector’s item rather than a mass-market revival.
The original sweatshirt became synonymous with Diana’s relaxed yet quietly defiant style – a blend of confidence, approachability and subtle rebellion that defined her off-duty wardrobe. The new edition stays faithful to that spirit, retaining the deep-navy cotton, ribbed trims and the vintage Flying Lady emblem, inspired by 1930s aviation art, with her cape flowing and Virgin emblazoned across her back.

Designed for versatility, the sweatshirt is intentionally soft and easy to wear, suited to weekend walks, airport lounges and casual coffee stops. It captures a distinctly 1990s sense of casual chic that feels as relevant today as it did three decades ago.
Beyond nostalgia, the relaunch is rooted in social impact. For every jumper sold, £10 will be donated to Save the Children, supporting its Emergency Fund for children affected by conflict, hunger and natural disasters. The initiative is further strengthened by retail partner Tourvest, which has waived its usual fees to ensure more funds reach those in need.
Virgin Atlantic has also made a dedicated donation to The Diana Award, extending the late Princess’s legacy of championing young people and kindness-driven action.
“Princess Diana’s Virgin Atlantic jumper became an emblem of individuality,” said Sophie Woodford, Head of Creative and Design at Virgin Atlantic. “Recreating it for Save the Children lets us honour her spirit with a modern twist – combining purpose, nostalgia and a little Virgin flair along the way.”
The partnership reflects Virgin Atlantic’s long-standing collaboration with Save the Children, focused on rapid response when crises strike. Through the Emergency Fund, donations help deliver healthcare, food, shelter and education – essentials that restore stability and hope for families facing emergency situations.
Dubbed by many as the “People’s Pullover”, the sweatshirt’s return is as much a cultural tribute as a fashion moment. It speaks to Princess Diana’s enduring influence, from her authenticity and quiet strength to a sense of style that remains unmistakably British and endlessly inspiring.
With numbers strictly limited, the reissued sweatshirt is expected to sell quickly. More than a nostalgic revival, it stands as proof that an iconic piece of clothing can still carry meaning – and make a tangible difference – decades after it first captured the public imagination.
