Young V&A Named Europe’s Best Museum

A small UK gallery has been named Europe’s best museum after winning the Council of Europe Prize 2026. Young V&A, the London-based branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum, secured the prestigious honour, which recognises nearly five decades of contributions to the understanding of European cultural heritage, human rights, and democracy.

The winner was selected by the Council of Europe’s Committee on Culture, which praised Young V&A for its role in supporting younger generations and for its innovative approach to exhibition design.

The committee highlighted the museum’s strong educational focus, noting its balance between play and learning, as well as its exploration of contemporary themes such as sustainability and empathy. Located in Bethnal Green with free admission, the gallery was also recognised for its commitment to accessibility. It actively engages children with special educational needs and those from disadvantaged communities, aiming to help them “look to the future with confidence and fully participate in democratic society.”

Young V&A holds the UK’s largest collection of childhood-related objects. Its three main galleries – Play, Imagine, and Design – are designed for visitors of all ages, combining traditional displays with hands-on creative workshops.

Among the most popular exhibits are its extensive dollhouse collection, the life-sized puppet horse Joey from the production War Horse, and the original Superman costume worn by actor Christopher Reeve.

The official awards ceremony for the Council of Europe Prize will take place in Strasbourg in April 2026.
