Wizz Air has announced a major expansion in Montenegro, confirming the opening of its 36th operational base at Podgorica Airport. The move marks a significant milestone for the country’s aviation sector and is expected to stimulate local tourism, trade, and employment.
Starting in March 2026, the airline will gradually station two Airbus A321neo aircraft in the Montenegrin capital and launch 14 new routes linking Podgorica with major European cities including Basel Mulhouse, Paris, Baden Baden, Cologne, Hamburg, Rome, Maastricht, Barcelona, Ljubljana, Malmö, Gdańsk, Poznań, Rzeszów and Wrocław.
The new base will add approximately one million additional seats annually, positioning Podgorica as a growing regional hub and Wizz Air as the leading airline in Montenegro. Tickets are already available through wizzair.com and the WIZZ mobile app.
The opening will also bring a significant boost to the local economy, with the airline estimating the creation of 80 direct jobs and around 700 indirect positions in tourism, hospitality and airport services.
Since beginning operations in Montenegro in 2016 with its first route from Podgorica to Bergamo, Wizz Air has carried nearly two million passengers to and from the country. In 2025, the carrier offered 402,000 seats from Montenegro, up 12.6% year-on-year, and achieved a 99.8% flight completion rate alongside an 18% improvement in punctuality.
József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air, said the new base reflects the airline’s long-term commitment to Montenegro:
“Wizz Air is deeply committed to Montenegro’s future – by expanding affordable travel options, supporting sustainable aviation through our modern A321neo aircraft, and driving growth in tourism and related industries. This base is more than an operational expansion – it’s an investment in the country’s mobility, economy, and global reach.”
With the addition of these new services, Wizz Air will operate 23 routes across 12 countries from Podgorica by summer 2026, significantly expanding Montenegro’s direct air links with Western and Central Europe.
Wizz Air, named EMEA’s Most Sustainable Airline Group of the Year, has officially opened its new base at Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan in partnership with “Armenia” International Airports.
