Warsaw Chopin Runway Closure Redirects Widebody Flight to Radom

From September 22 to October 25, 2025, Runway No. 1 at Warsaw Chopin Airport (Okęcie), designated RWY 29/11 on the Ursynów–Ursus axis, will remain closed for partial renovations. During this period, all flight operations are being handled exclusively on Runway No. 3 (RWY 33/15), which runs along the Piaseczno–Włochy–Ochota–Bemowo corridor.

The temporary closure has already led to an operational milestone for Warsaw-Radom Airport (Sadków). On September 25, a Mavi Gök Airlines Boeing 777-300ER (registration TC-MGG) was redirected from Chopin to Radom, marking the first time in the airport’s history that it handled a widebody aircraft of this type.

The aircraft, arriving from Antalya at 13:11 local time, underwent full ground handling at Radom—including passenger disembarkation, baggage processing, and reboarding—before departing back to the Turkish resort at 15:01. The turnaround of the nearly 17-year-old jet was completed in under two hours.

The incident underscores Radom’s growing operational role within the Polish Airports network during the Chopin renovations. Until October 25, Radom will continue to support diversions, demonstrating its ability to handle heavier, long-haul aircraft—something operators hope will help the airport avoid the fate of Spain’s Ciudad Real Airport, a costly infrastructure project that struggled to attract sustained traffic.
