NATO Scrambles Jets to Intercept Russian Aircraft Near Latvia as Drone Sightings Spread Across Europe

NATO fighter jets were scrambled once again after five Russian military aircraft were detected near Latvian airspace. According to NATO, the group consisted of three MiG-31s, a Su-30, and a Su-35, and was flying in violation of international flight safety rules. Hungarian fighters were deployed to intercept the planes.

Meanwhile, Sweden reported unidentified drones over the Karlskrona naval base, local outlet P4 Blekinge said. The incident follows a string of drone incursions in recent weeks: Russian drones have already entered Polish airspace and temporarily shut down airports in Denmark, where officials called the incidents “the most serious attack on the country’s critical infrastructure.”

Additional concerns were raised after Danish journalists from Ekstra Bladet discovered the Russian landing ship Alexander Shabalin operating without an active locator signal just 12 kilometers off Langeland Island. Danish security sources suspect the drones that disrupted airports may have been launched directly from the vessel.

On the night of September 22, unidentified drones were also spotted over the Mourmelon-le-Grand military base in northeastern France. Covering more than 10,000 hectares, the base is one of the largest in Europe, according to French media citing AFP. On September 25, the information was confirmed by the departmental military delegation in Marne, which informed AFP of the incident.
