Hanoi has officially launched construction of five new metro lines in what will become the largest transport infrastructure project in the Vietnamese capital’s history.
The expansion will add 292 kilometers of new rail infrastructure at an estimated cost of more than 1.3 quadrillion Vietnamese dong (approximately US$49.5 billion). The project forms part of Hanoi’s 100-year master plan, which aims to create a multi-centered urban model with better distribution of housing, employment, and economic activity.
Five Metro Lines to Be Built Simultaneously
All five metro lines will be constructed at the same time, significantly accelerating the development of Hanoi’s public transport network.
The new routes will connect the city center with Noi Bai International Airport as well as several new residential and commercial districts currently under development.
The metro expansion is being integrated with broader urban development plans, linking transport infrastructure with new housing projects to support future population growth.
Vingroup Consortium Leads the Project
The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract has been awarded to a consortium formed by Vinhomes and VinSpeed High-Speed Rail Investment and Development.
Both companies are part of Vietnam’s private conglomerate Vingroup, one of the country’s largest business groups with interests spanning real estate, transportation, technology, and manufacturing.
Expanding Hanoi’s Young Metro Network
Hanoi’s metro system remains one of the newest in Southeast Asia.
The city’s first metro line—and Vietnam’s first urban railway—opened in 2021 after approximately ten years of construction. The 13-kilometer elevated line includes 12 stations.
Today, Hanoi’s metro consists of two unconnected lines operated by a fleet of 13 four-car trains manufactured by Beijing Subway Rolling Stock Equipment, part of CRRC, each accommodating up to 1,000 passengers. The network also includes 10 four-car Alstom Metropolis trains with a capacity of up to 950 passengers each.
Long-Term Vision Includes 14 Metro Lines
The five new routes represent a major step toward Hanoi’s long-term transportation strategy.
Under the city’s master plan, the capital will eventually develop a comprehensive metro network comprising 14 lines designed to reduce road congestion, improve connectivity across the metropolitan area, and support sustainable urban growth.
Once completed, the expanded network is expected to transform mobility across Hanoi while providing faster links between the city center, the airport, and newly developed urban districts.
