Wilderness has unveiled the redesigned Wilderness Mara safari camp in Kenya’s iconic Mara Triangle, introducing a contemporary interpretation of luxury safari accommodation inspired by local craftsmanship, sustainable design and the surrounding landscape.
Located on the edge of a seasonal marsh within one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations, the camp features 12 luxury tented suites, including a family suite, carefully positioned to maximise views across the Maasai Mara ecosystem.
Design Inspired by the Mara
The new interiors, created by Chris Payne of White Elephant Interiors in collaboration with Wilderness, draw directly from the colours and textures of the Mara, incorporating earthy browns, golden grassland tones, cool blue skies and rich green vegetation throughout the accommodation.
“It was about honouring what was already here, while allowing the interiors to breathe with their surroundings rather than compete with them,” said Chris Payne.
The redesign preserves the heritage of the former Little Governors’ Camp while introducing a more refined contemporary safari aesthetic.
Celebrating Kenyan Craftsmanship
Much of the furniture, joinery and interior décor has been produced in Kenya using sustainable materials and traditional craftsmanship.
Guest suites feature handwoven textiles from Nairobi studio Siafu, custom-made white oak cabinetry with woven rattan details and brass accents inspired by traditional Maasai jewellery. Full-height glass doors open onto private outdoor showers, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living.
Throughout the camp, Maasai beadwork, locally crafted furniture and bespoke artworks celebrate East African creative traditions while supporting regional artisans and women’s cooperatives.
Sustainability at the Core
Sustainability guided every stage of the redesign. Bathroom rugs are manufactured from recycled plastic bottles, deck lighting has been 3D printed in Nairobi using recycled plastics, and reclaimed furniture has been restored wherever possible rather than replaced.
Certified sustainable timber, passive cooling techniques, energy-efficient LED lighting and locally sourced materials further reduce the camp’s environmental footprint.
Spaces for Relaxation and Connection
The camp’s communal lounge and dining areas combine leather seating, sculptural lighting, African artworks and handcrafted furnishings to create inviting gathering spaces overlooking the surrounding wilderness.
A dedicated Study provides a quiet retreat for reading, photography editing and conservation storytelling sessions linked to Wilderness’ environmental programmes.
By combining thoughtful contemporary design with local materials, regional craftsmanship and a strong commitment to conservation, Wilderness Mara offers a modern safari experience that remains deeply connected to the landscapes, wildlife and communities of Kenya’s Mara Triangle.
