Abercrombie & Kent has expanded its luxury hospitality portfolio with the opening of Kitirua Plains Lodge, a new safari retreat set within a private conservancy bordering Kenya’s Amboseli National Park.
The property becomes the 13th member of the A&K Sanctuary collection and offers guests front-row views of one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife landscapes, with Mount Kilimanjaro providing a dramatic backdrop.
Located in southern Kenya, the lodge combines contemporary architecture, wellness-focused experiences and close partnerships with local Maasai communities.
A New Vision For Luxury Safari Design
Kitirua Plains Lodge represents a departure from the traditional canvas-tent safari model that has long defined East African luxury travel.
Designed in partnership with Luxury Frontiers, the lodge draws inspiration from Maasai principles of living in harmony with nature. Curved walls and flowing rooflines mirror the surrounding terrain, while exterior finishes incorporate soil sourced directly from the site to help the buildings blend naturally into the landscape.
The lodge features 11 suites and two larger two-bedroom suites. Interiors emphasize natural materials, woven textures and neutral tones that reflect the colors of the surrounding savannah.
Each standard suite spans 116 square metres and includes indoor and outdoor showers, a freestanding bath and a private veranda overlooking the plains. The larger family suites offer more than 240 square metres of space and are connected by shared living areas.
Luxury Wellness Meets Maasai Traditions
The property places a strong emphasis on wellness, featuring treatments developed in partnership with South African spa brand Healing Earth.
Signature experiences include the Enkai Earth Blessing ritual, inspired by Maasai spiritual traditions, and the Maasai Red Earth Ritual, which incorporates indigenous ingredients and therapeutic techniques.
Guests also have access to double treatment rooms, an open-air yoga deck, a fitness centre and an infinity pool positioned within an existing wetland area.
Dining focuses on locally sourced ingredients and seasonal produce, with five-course dinners and traditional Boma Braai evenings served under the stars.
Prime Wildlife Viewing With Fewer Crowds
Situated within a private conservancy adjacent to Amboseli National Park, the lodge provides access to one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife regions while avoiding the higher vehicle numbers often found within the park itself.
The Amboseli ecosystem is renowned for its large elephant herds, as well as lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes and more than 400 bird species.
Game drives are led by A&K’s experienced guiding team, and guests receive Leica binoculars for use throughout their stay. Hot-air balloon safaris above the plains are also available.
Supporting Local Communities
Community engagement forms a central part of the project. Construction is already underway on the Kitirua Nalepu Pre-School, which is expected to provide modern educational facilities for local families.
The development also builds on broader initiatives supported by A&K Philanthropy, including water access projects that have delivered LifeStraw filtration systems to schools and healthcare facilities throughout the Amboseli region.
According to A&K, Kitirua Plains Lodge reflects the future direction of its luxury portfolio, focusing on meaningful community partnerships, sustainable development and a stronger connection between guests and the destinations they visit.
Nightly rates start from US$840 per person, including accommodation, meals, beverages, game drives, airstrip transfers, laundry services and emergency medical evacuation coverage.
