The Lux Collective has expanded its presence in Rwanda with the opening of SALT of Akagera, a new luxury eco-safari lodge overlooking Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park.
Located within Rwanda’s only Big Five reserve, the 60-key property marks the first safari lodge under the SALT brand and introduces the group’s people-focused hospitality philosophy to one of East Africa’s most significant conservation destinations.
The opening comes as Rwanda continues to strengthen its position as a high-end tourism destination, combining wildlife experiences with sustainability and community-led development.
A luxury safari experience rooted in nature
Set among Akagera National Park’s diverse landscapes of savannah, wetlands, woodlands and lakes, SALT of Akagera has been designed to blend into its natural surroundings.
The lodge combines locally sourced materials, earthy colours and handcrafted Rwandan details to create an intimate safari atmosphere while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding environment.
Guests can enjoy views across Lake Ihema while exploring one of Africa’s most celebrated conservation success stories. Akagera National Park has become a model for wildlife restoration after successfully reintroducing lions and rhinos, restoring the reserve’s Big Five status.
Farm-to-table dining and cultural experiences
Food plays a central role in the SALT experience, with menus inspired by ingredients sourced from Rwanda’s fertile volcanic soils and surrounding communities.
The culinary programme follows a zero-waste, farm-to-table philosophy and highlights local produce, freshwater fish, honey and coffee sourced from nearby farms.
Among the lodge’s signature experiences is Root to Table, which explores Rwanda’s agricultural traditions through immersive dining experiences that trace ingredients from the soil to the plate.
Guests can also participate in Boma Nights, featuring open-fire cooking under the stars and dishes inspired by regional flavours and traditions.
Conservation and community at the core
SALT of Akagera places a strong emphasis on meaningful engagement with local communities and conservation initiatives.
The Beyond the Gate experience offers visitors exclusive insights into the management and protection of Akagera National Park, which is recognised as the largest protected wetland in Central Africa.
Additional programmes such as SALT Shakers and Skill Swap encourage cultural exchange between guests, local artisans, conservationists and community members, creating opportunities for shared learning and authentic connections.
The lodge operates under The Lux Collective’s Circle of Care sustainability framework, focusing on responsible tourism, local sourcing, environmental awareness and community development.
Part of Rwanda’s growing luxury tourism circuit
The opening of SALT of Akagera follows the launch of LUX* Lake Kivu and forms part of a wider expansion strategy in Rwanda.
The Lux Collective has confirmed plans for three additional developments scheduled for 2028 across Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe National Park and Akagera National Park.
Together, the projects aim to strengthen Rwanda’s position as a leading destination for luxury, nature-based travel while supporting conservation and sustainable tourism growth across the country.
