Georgia is set to develop a castle-inspired luxury hotel on its Black Sea coast, with the five-star Sky Castle resort scheduled to open in 2031 near the Turkish border.
The project, located in Gonio just south of Batumi, is designed to commemorate the 910th anniversary of the Battle of Didgori, one of the most significant military victories in Georgian history.
Inspired by Medieval History
Developed by Georgian construction company European Village, Sky Castle will combine contemporary luxury hospitality with architectural elements inspired by medieval fortresses and the era of the Crusades.
The resort will recreate the atmosphere of the 12th century through its design while incorporating modern five-star facilities. The hotel will feature two towers rising 14 and 16 storeys, offering a total of 430 guestrooms.
Perched on a mountainside overlooking the Black Sea, the property will provide panoramic coastal views and operate as an all-inclusive resort.
Honouring the Battle of Didgori
The hotel’s theme is inspired by the Battle of Didgori, fought in 1121, when King David IV, known as David the Builder, led Georgian forces to victory over the Seljuk army. The battle paved the way for the liberation of Tbilisi and is widely regarded as the beginning of Georgia’s Golden Age.
Historical accounts suggest that Crusader knights travelling from Jerusalem joined Georgian, Ossetian and Kipchak forces during the campaign. According to the developers, this historical connection has influenced the concept behind the new resort.
Part of Larger Luxury Development
Sky Castle will become the fifth hotel within the Wyndham Grand Batumi Gonio development, which is being promoted as Georgia’s first luxury all-inclusive resort destination.
The project represents an investment of approximately US$155 million, making it one of the country’s largest hospitality developments. Once completed, it is expected to become a distinctive landmark on Georgia’s Black Sea coast while combining luxury tourism with the country’s medieval heritage.
