Air Mauritius Considers Launching Direct Moscow Flights

Air Mauritius is considering launching direct flights between Mauritius and Moscow, a move that could significantly improve air connectivity between the Indian Ocean island nation and Russia.

The potential route is currently under discussion and could be introduced as early as this year, according to officials from the Mauritius tourism authority. The proposal comes as Russian visitor numbers to Mauritius continue to grow despite ongoing challenges affecting transit travel through Middle Eastern hubs.

If approved, the service would provide a new direct option for Russian travellers seeking access to one of the Indian Ocean’s most popular luxury holiday destinations.

Direct Moscow Flights Under Consideration

Mauritius tourism officials confirmed that Air Mauritius is evaluating the possibility of introducing direct services between Mauritius and the Russian capital.

The discussions form part of wider efforts to strengthen tourism ties between the two countries and improve accessibility for Russian holidaymakers.

Tourism authorities expressed optimism that a positive decision could be reached before the end of the year, potentially opening a new chapter in air connectivity between the destinations.

Aeroflot Return Also Under Discussion

Alongside talks involving Air Mauritius, discussions are continuing regarding the possible return of direct services operated by Aeroflot.

The Russian carrier operated flights to Mauritius during the 2024-2025 winter season, helping drive strong growth in visitor arrivals from Russia.

According to tourism officials, one of the key challenges affecting a potential resumption of Aeroflot flights involves aircraft refuelling arrangements on the island.

Negotiations on the issue are reportedly ongoing.

Fleet Availability Remains Key Factor

One of the main considerations for Air Mauritius is aircraft availability.

The airline currently operates between 20 and 25 weekly flights to major European destinations and has limited spare capacity to launch new long-haul routes.

However, the carrier is expected to receive additional aircraft later this year, a development that could strengthen the business case for opening services to Russia.

Tourism officials believe the arrival of new aircraft may play an important role in the airline’s final decision.

Potential for Moscow and St Petersburg Services

Representatives of the Mauritius tourism sector believe demand from Russia could support regular direct flights from both Moscow and St Petersburg.

Initial estimates suggest the market may be capable of sustaining at least one weekly service from each city.

Improved air connectivity would not only support leisure tourism but could also strengthen business and cultural links between the two countries.

Russian Tourism Continues to Grow

The discussions come as Mauritius records continued growth in arrivals from Russia.

During the first five months of 2026, the number of Russian visitors increased by 5.5% compared with the same period last year, despite disruptions affecting some transit routes through the Middle East.

Many Russian travellers currently rely on connecting flights through regional aviation hubs to reach Mauritius.

Direct Flights Previously Drove Record Growth

The impact of direct air services was clearly demonstrated in 2024 when Russian visitor numbers to Mauritius surged following the introduction of Aeroflot flights.

Russian arrivals increased by 84% during the year, reaching approximately 28,750 visitors.

The growth established Russia as an increasingly important source market for Mauritius, particularly within the luxury leisure travel segment.

Mauritius Seeks to Strengthen Market Position

Mauritius has continued to target Russian travellers as part of its broader international tourism strategy.

The island’s combination of luxury resorts, beaches, outdoor activities and year-round warm climate has helped it maintain popularity among long-haul holidaymakers.

Improved air connectivity is viewed as a critical factor in sustaining future growth and making the destination more accessible to Russian visitors.

Decision Expected Later This Year

While no final agreement has yet been announced, industry stakeholders are closely monitoring developments surrounding both Air Mauritius and Aeroflot.

If direct services are restored or launched, travellers could gain significantly easier access to Mauritius while the destination stands to benefit from increased visitor numbers and stronger tourism revenues.

The coming months are expected to be crucial as airlines evaluate operational requirements, fleet availability and market demand before making a final decision on future Russia-Mauritius air services.
