MEININGER Opens First Hotel In Spain With Barcelona Debut

MEININGER Hotels has officially entered the Spanish market with the opening of MEININGER Hotel Barcelona Fira Gran Via, marking a major milestone in the company’s Southern European expansion strategy.

The new property, located opposite the Fira Gran Via exhibition and congress centre, will welcome its first guests on June 25, 2026. The hotel occupies a converted office building spanning more than 6,000 square metres and offers 162 rooms with over 500 beds, alongside 30 parking spaces.

Spain debut for MEININGER

The Barcelona opening represents MEININGER’s first hotel in Spain and expands the group’s portfolio to 37 properties across Europe.

“This is an important milestone in our European growth strategy. Located in the heart of Catalonia, Barcelona is a premier global destination that seamlessly blends leisure and business travel year-round. It is the ideal launch pad to introduce our hybrid concept to Spain,” said Ajit Menon, Chief Executive Officer of MEININGER Hotels.

The launch also signals the beginning of a new growth phase for the company after a three-year pause in hotel openings. MEININGER’s most recent additions were launched in Venice, Kraków and Cologne in 2023.

Hybrid hotel concept

Like other MEININGER properties, the Barcelona hotel combines elements of traditional hotels and hostels, offering private accommodation alongside communal spaces designed to encourage social interaction.

The property features exclusively private rooms, ranging from double rooms to four-bed family-style accommodation. Shared facilities include a lounge area, three terraces, a bar and a “heat & eat” area where guests can prepare or store food.

The concept is designed to appeal to a broad mix of travellers, including families, groups, business travellers and independent guests.

Focus on sustainability

The hotel has been developed with sustainability at its core and has achieved BREEAM certification, one of the world’s leading environmental assessment standards for buildings.

The property operates entirely on renewable electricity supplied by a local provider and incorporates energy-efficient insulation, solar panels and water-saving technologies throughout the building, including flow restrictors on taps and showers.

Prime location near Fira Gran Via

Situated directly opposite Fira Gran Via, one of Europe’s largest exhibition and convention centres, the hotel is positioned to benefit from strong demand generated by international trade fairs, conferences and major events.

The property also offers convenient access to central Barcelona, Camp Nou stadium and Barcelona-El Prat Airport, which can be reached in approximately 20 minutes.

“It’s a true honor to become Hotel Manager of the first MEININGER in Spain, right here in my hometown,” said Mariluz Álvarez, Hotel Manager of MEININGER Hotel Barcelona.

“Barcelona is such a dynamic, diverse and vibrant city, which makes it a perfect fit for MEININGER. We’re not just offering a place to stay. We help people experience a destination from the moment they walk through our doors and truly connect with our unique vibe.”

Further expansion planned

Barcelona is expected to be the first of several MEININGER openings across the Iberian Peninsula. The company has already confirmed plans to open a hotel in Madrid in 2027.

Additional projects are also in development across Europe, including openings in Edinburgh and Tel Aviv in 2026, Strasbourg in 2027, and Porto and Dublin in 2028.
