Royal Caribbean Introduces Undercover Robots on Icon Class Ships

Royal Caribbean is quietly reshaping life at sea – not with bigger pools or flashier shows, but with something far more futuristic. A new generation of robotic crew members is now joining its Icon Class ships, signaling a major shift in how cruises operate behind the scenes and, increasingly, in front of guests.

With more than 100,000 human employees powering operations across its fleet, the cruise giant is now adding a new kind of coworker into the mix. These machines are not replacing staff – at least not yet – but working alongside them in ways that could redefine efficiency, sustainability and even entertainment onboard.

The move comes as Royal Caribbean doubles down on innovation, following the launch of high-end offerings like its multi-generational Ultimate Family Tree House Suite and its evolving Perfect Day destination concept. Technology, it seems, is becoming just as central to the cruise experience as destinations themselves.

Robots that clean beneath the surface

The first wave of these “undercover” robots has already been deployed on ships like Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas. Their initial task is largely invisible to passengers but critical to performance.

Operating underwater, these robotic hull scrubbers keep the ship’s exterior clean, reducing drag as it moves through the ocean. The result is a quieter but significant improvement in fuel efficiency and energy consumption – a growing priority in an industry under pressure to become more sustainable.

After proving effective, these robots are now being expanded across all Icon Class ships, moving from a trial phase into a standard operational tool.

From hulls to hallways

The next step brings robots closer to the daily rhythm of life onboard. New robotic cleaners are being introduced to handle behind-the-scenes cleaning tasks throughout the ship.

Controlled through a QR-based system linked to a digital map of the vessel, these machines can be directed to specific zones and assigned precise duties. It’s a system designed to optimize workflow, reduce manual strain and ensure consistent cleanliness across vast, complex floating environments.

For passengers, most of this will go unnoticed – but it forms part of a broader push toward smarter, more automated cruise operations.

Enter the cobots

Perhaps the most visible change comes with the introduction of collaborative robots, or “cobots.” Unlike the discreet cleaning machines, these robots are designed to interact with both crew and guests.

Equipped with friendly, expressive “eyes,” cobots are already being positioned in guest-facing roles. Robotic bartenders are among the most eye-catching additions, blending novelty with efficiency. In some cases, these machines are even appearing alongside performers, hinting at a future where entertainment and technology merge more seamlessly.

The goal is not to replace human interaction but to enhance it – adding a layer of novelty and support that allows crew members to focus on more personalized service.

A glimpse into the future of cruising

Royal Caribbean’s embrace of robotics reflects a wider transformation across the travel industry. As ships grow larger and more complex, the demand for efficiency, sustainability and innovation continues to rise.

By integrating both hidden and highly visible robotic systems, the company is positioning its Icon Class ships as a testing ground for the future of cruising. What begins as underwater cleaners and novelty bartenders today could evolve into a far more integrated robotic workforce in the years ahead.

For now, passengers may only notice the occasional mechanical coworker with blinking eyes – but behind the scenes, the cruise experience is already being quietly rewritten.
