AI Revolution in Tourism: Which Travel Jobs Are Disappearing

The rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Bing Copilot is reshaping the way the tourism industry operates. According to a recent Microsoft study analyzing 200,000 user interactions with Bing Copilot, AI is already handling tasks that were once time-consuming for travel professionals—freeing them to focus on more creative and personalized services.

AI Handles the Basics—Fast and Efficient

The study highlights the top ways travelers are using AI: searching for information (32%), writing content like tour descriptions and emails (18%), communicating with clients via chatbots (12%), booking trips and managing documents (9%), and analyzing customer reviews and preferences (7%).

In response, AI systems are delivering quick and reliable support: providing information (28%), offering travel advice (20%), generating content (15%), and automating routine tasks such as seat availability checks and notifications (10%).

Jobs Most Affected by AI

The research introduces an “AI applicability score,” measuring how likely professions are to be influenced by AI. In tourism, roles with the highest impact include:

  • Translators (0.49): AI can accurately translate text and speech.

  • Travel agents (0.41): Automated tour selection and document processing.

  • Concierges (0.40): Delegating city guides, restaurant bookings, and general inquiries.

  • Sales managers (0.36): AI assists in analyzing demand and supporting negotiations.

  • Tour guides (0.35): Virtual guides and audio tours can replace standard routes.

Meanwhile, niche tour guides, event organizers, and instructors remain less affected, as these roles require human creativity, personal interaction, and physical presence.

The Benefits—and Risks—of AI

AI’s main advantages in tourism include faster information processing, personalized recommendations, and reduced operational costs. However, challenges remain: incorrect information—such as visa rules—can mislead travelers, and the human touch in service may be lost. Microsoft notes that while AI will not fully replace professionals, it will reshape their roles, allowing them to focus on individualized experiences rather than routine tasks.

As AI continues to evolve, the tourism industry faces a future where technology and human expertise work hand in hand, creating faster, smarter, and more personalized travel experiences.
