Planning a Trip to Upstate New York? Storm Systems Could Disrupt Travel Plans

Anyone planning a trip across Upstate New York this week may need to prepare for significant weather-related disruptions, as a series of storm systems moves through the region bringing heavy rain and the risk of flooding.

The first wave of rain has already arrived, with conditions capable of triggering flash flooding from Buffalo to Syracuse. Rainfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour, and some areas may see totals of up to 3 inches in a single day – enough to overwhelm drainage systems and create hazardous driving conditions.

For travelers on the road, this means reduced visibility, water pooling on highways, and the potential for sudden road closures in low-lying or flood-prone areas. Urban routes and smaller rural roads alike could be affected, particularly where repeated thunderstorms track over the same locations.

There is also a secondary concern for strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts. While not guaranteed, this risk could increase if skies clear briefly and allow temperatures to rise, creating more unstable atmospheric conditions. In that scenario, delays and temporary disruptions to flights in and out of regional airports are possible.

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue through the weekend, complicating travel plans further. With the ground already saturated, each additional round of rain increases the likelihood of flooding. On the Tug Hill Plateau, melting snow will add to the runoff, raising water levels in creeks and rivers and potentially impacting nearby roads.

A flood watch remains in place for all of Upstate New York west of the Capital Region through at least Wednesday night. For visitors, this means conditions are favorable for flooding, even if impacts vary by location.

Across the Finger Lakes and Central New York – popular areas for spring getaways and scenic drives – between 2 and 3 inches of rain is expected through Thursday morning. Travelers heading to wineries, lakeside towns, or outdoor attractions should be prepared for sudden weather changes and possible itinerary adjustments.

Forecasters emphasize that thunderstorms are difficult to predict precisely, meaning the heaviest rain could fall in unexpected areas. For those with travel plans, flexibility and close monitoring of weather updates will be key in the days ahead.
