Singapore Airlines to Launch First Commercial Flights at Western Sydney’s New Airport

Singapore Airlines is set to become the first carrier to operate from Western Sydney International Airport, marking a defining moment for Australia’s newest aviation hub and signaling confidence in a project years in the making.

The airline’s decision means that the first commercial passenger flights from the airport could begin roughly one month after its official opening, pointing to a phased and carefully managed rollout rather than an immediate full-scale launch.

Located in Badgerys Creek, Western Sydney International Airport has been designed to transform access to Sydney by serving the city’s rapidly growing western region while easing pressure on Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. Unlike the existing airport, it will operate without a curfew, giving airlines greater flexibility to schedule flights at all hours.

Singapore Airlines’ early commitment is strategically significant. As one of the world’s leading long-haul carriers, its presence establishes an immediate international connection between Western Sydney and Asia via Singapore. This route is expected to play a key role in linking the new airport to global markets from day one.

The delayed start of commercial flights following the official opening reflects the complexity of launching a new airport. Authorities and operators are expected to use the initial weeks to test systems, finalize operations, and ensure that passenger processing, security, and logistics run smoothly before scaling up activity.

For Singapore Airlines, being the first mover offers clear advantages. The airline gains early access to infrastructure and slots while positioning itself as the flagship international carrier at a brand-new gateway. It also strengthens its already strong footprint in Australia, a key market in its global network.

More airlines are expected to follow as the airport approaches full operational readiness. The gradual introduction of services is designed to build reliability and passenger confidence while avoiding the disruptions that can accompany large-scale openings.

Western Sydney International Airport represents one of the most significant infrastructure developments in Australia’s aviation sector in decades. With Singapore Airlines leading its commercial debut, the airport is poised to enter the market with both credibility and global reach from its earliest days.
