1,220 Delays Across Major German Airports as Snow Grounds Aircraft

Severe winter weather is continuing to disrupt air travel across Germany, with multiple major airports reporting flight cancellations and widespread delays as snow, ice, and strong winds affect operations.

Severe winter weather has led to at least 69 flight cancellations and more than 1,220 delays across major German airports, including Berlin Brandenburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. Airlines affected include Lufthansa, Air Dolomiti, German Airways, KLM and easyJet as crews and ground staff cope with snow, strong winds and low visibility.

At Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest aviation hub, airlines have been forced to adjust schedules due to snowfall and operational constraints during peak departure waves. While the airport has remained open, weather-related delays and selective cancellations have affected both short-haul European services and some long-haul flights, particularly during early-morning and evening periods.

Similar conditions have been reported at Munich Airport, where snow and low temperatures have slowed ground handling and aircraft turnaround times. Airlines operating dense short- and medium-haul networks have been especially exposed, with passengers experiencing delays as aircraft await de-icing and crews manage revised departure slots.

In northern Germany, Hamburg Airport has also seen cancellations and delays as snow clearance teams worked to keep runways and taxiways operational. Several airlines have cancelled individual flights as a precaution, while others warned passengers to expect delays throughout the day.

At Düsseldorf Airport, winter weather led to a smaller number of outright cancellations, but de-icing requirements and icy conditions caused delays across the schedule. Airport officials said operations were largely stable but remained vulnerable to further snowfall.

German carriers including Lufthansa and its regional partners have been among the airlines most affected, as the weather disrupted aircraft rotations across their European networks. The impact has been compounded by congestion at other European hubs, particularly in the Netherlands and France, leading to further knock-on delays for flights to and from Germany.

Passengers travelling through German airports have been advised to check flight status before leaving for the airport and to allow extra time for check-in and security, as weather-related adjustments may continue. With cold conditions forecast to persist, airport operators and airlines warned that further disruption remains possible until weather conditions improve and normal operations can be fully restored.
