Finnair has unveiled a major expansion of its long-haul network with the launch of flights to Melbourne, marking the airline’s first-ever destination in Australia. The new service is scheduled to begin in October 2026 and will operate daily via Bangkok using the airline’s Airbus A350 fleet.
The addition of Melbourne represents a strategic milestone for Finnair, directly linking Australia with the carrier’s Helsinki hub and providing seamless connections across Europe and beyond.
A new bridge between hemispheres
Christine Rovelli, Chief Revenue Officer at Finnair, described the route as a symbolic and practical connection between two distant regions.
By linking Helsinki and Melbourne, Finnair aims to create a unique bridge between the northern and southern hemispheres, appealing both to European travellers heading to Australia and to Australians exploring Northern Europe and other global destinations through Helsinki.
Flight schedule and connectivity
Flights from Helsinki are scheduled to depart shortly after midnight, arriving in Bangkok in the afternoon before continuing to Melbourne following a brief stop. The aircraft is expected to reach Melbourne the next morning.
On the return leg, flights will depart Melbourne in the afternoon, stop in Bangkok in the evening, and arrive in Helsinki early the following day. This timing is designed to align with Finnair’s first wave of morning departures across Europe, ensuring smooth onward connections for passengers.
According to the airline, the routing also allows for efficient aircraft utilisation and operational reliability across its A350 fleet.
Melbourne as a strategic destination
Located on Australia’s southeastern coast, Melbourne is widely regarded as the country’s cultural capital, known for its vibrant food scene, arts, and sporting events. The city also has a significant European diaspora, along with a large population of international students and expatriates, making it an attractive market for both leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives travel.
The new route strengthens Finnair’s position in the Asia-Pacific region while expanding its global reach into a new continent.
Booking and broader network plans
Tickets for the Melbourne route will be available on Finnair.com from 18 December, with the inaugural flight planned for 25 October 2026, subject to government approval.
Looking ahead to 2026, Finnair’s network will include 93 European destinations, 11 destinations in Asia, seven in North America, including Toronto launching in summer 2026, and two destinations in the Middle East.
