Over 100 Injured in High-Speed Train Collision in Slovakia

More than 100 people were injured after two high-speed trains collided near the village of Jablonov nad Turňou in eastern Slovakia. The crash occurred just before a tunnel entrance, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

According to Petra Klimešová, spokesperson for Slovakia’s Operational Centre of Emergency Medical Services, nine people sustained moderate to serious injuries, while two remain in critical condition. Seven ambulances, three rescue helicopters, and two evacuation buses were dispatched to the scene to transport victims to nearby hospitals.

Early reports suggest that the accident may have been caused by human error. Slovakia’s Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok said that one of the train drivers may have made a mistake and failed to yield, though this remains only a preliminary theory as the investigation continues.

One of the train drivers was tested at the scene for alcohol, narcotics, and psychotropic substances, with all results coming back negative. The second driver suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to hospital, where he also underwent toxicology testing.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. The area around the tunnel has been temporarily closed while emergency services complete rescue operations and assess damage to the railway infrastructure.

The incident has shocked Slovakia, where railway accidents of this scale are rare. Officials have pledged to review safety protocols and signaling systems once the initial investigation is complete.
