Sweden: The World’s First Destination You Can Get Prescribed by a Doctor

Imagine a destination so restorative that your doctor might actually prescribe it. Sweden has become the first country in the world to receive medical backing as a place to reset your mind and body. Rooted in balance and offering seamless access to both nature and culture, Sweden provides scientifically supported ways to improve wellbeing.

Together with Swedish senior professor Yvonne Forsell, experts have identified activities in Sweden that are proven to enhance mental and physical health. From forest walks to mindful cultural experiences, patients can now “prescribe” a trip to Sweden to manage stress, boost wellbeing, and reconnect with themselves.

Doctors Supporting the Swedish Prescription

  • Dr. Stacy Beller Stryer – U.S.-based board-certified pediatrician and associate medical director of ParkRxAmerica.org, advocating for nature prescriptions.

  • Dr. Sam Everington – UK-based Vice President of the British Medical Association, knighted for services to primary care.

  • Dr. Maaike ten Thije-de Boer – Netherlands-based specialist in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and lifestyle prescription advocate.

  • PD Dr. Michael Jeitler – Researcher in Green Space Interventions at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Bosch Health Campus Stuttgart, Germany.

With endorsements from leading healthcare professionals, Sweden is positioning itself not just as a travel destination, but as a science-backed retreat for mind, body, and soul.

Patients worldwide can now download a medical referral on visitsweden.com. The document can be brought to their doctor and used to start a conversation about how a visit to Sweden could support the patient’s wellbeing and serve as a basis for having a visit to Sweden prescribed.

Medical doctors can generate a prescription and advise patients to spend time in Sweden. Visit Sweden has identified a handful of doctors (listed above) ready to issue a prescription to visit Sweden when appropriate.

For patients who choose to visit Sweden, Visit Sweden has, together with Swedish senior professor Yvonne Forsell, identified a set of activities within three areas that patients can benefit from: nature, lifestyle, and culture. Visit Sweden does not cover any costs incurred with a prescription to visit Sweden.
