Sweden Tops Global Passport Index 2026 Rankings

Sweden has been ranked the world’s strongest passport in the fifth edition of the Global Passport Index (GPI) 2026, an annual ranking by Global Citizen Solutions that evaluates countries based on travel freedom, investment opportunities and quality of life.

Unlike traditional passport rankings that focus primarily on visa-free travel, the Global Passport Index combines three key pillars: enhanced global mobility, investment attractiveness and overall quality of life. The 2026 edition saw Europe dominate the rankings, with nine European countries occupying the top 10 positions.

Sweden Leads the Global Rankings

Sweden secured first place with a balanced performance across all categories, ranking 11th for global mobility, ninth for investment opportunities and second for quality of life.

Switzerland followed in second place, while Finland ranked third after achieving the world’s highest score for quality of life. Germany placed fourth, with the Netherlands and Denmark sharing fifth place.

Ireland, the United Kingdom and Norway completed the European presence in the top 10, while Singapore was the only non-European country to make the list.

Top 10 Passports in the Global Passport Index 2026

The top-ranked passports in this year’s index are:

1. Sweden
2. Switzerland
3. Finland
4. Germany
5. Netherlands (joint)
5. Denmark (joint)
7. Ireland
8. United Kingdom
9. Norway
10. Singapore

Singapore Excels in Mobility

Singapore retained its reputation as one of the world’s most powerful travel documents by ranking first globally for both passport mobility and investment attractiveness. However, its overall ranking was affected by a comparatively lower score for quality of life, where it placed 115th.

The United Kingdom remained in the top 10 thanks to strong quality-of-life indicators despite ranking only 30th for global mobility, reflecting the long-term impact of Brexit on visa-free travel access.

Gap Between Strongest and Weakest Passports Widens

According to Global Citizen Solutions, the difference between the world’s strongest and weakest passports continues to increase. Sweden achieved an overall score of 96.05 points, while Afghanistan ranked last with 23.10 points—a gap of 72.95 points that has widened steadily since the index was first published in 2021.

The report also found that reciprocity is not always reflected in bilateral visa agreements and noted that the world’s most privileged passports remain concentrated in wealthy European, English-speaking and Gulf countries.

Russia Ranks 95th

Russia placed 95th overall in the 2026 Global Passport Index. The country ranked 96th for global mobility, 55th for investment attractiveness and 138th for quality of life, highlighting significant differences between its performance across the three measured categories.

Global Citizen Solutions said the broader methodology is intended to provide a more comprehensive picture of passport strength by considering not only where holders can travel, but also the economic opportunities and living standards associated with citizenship.
