Budapest’s Iconic Gellért Baths to Close for Major Renovation Until 2028

One of Budapest’s most famous landmarks, the Gellért Baths, will close for extensive renovations starting 1 October 2025, with reopening scheduled for 2028, the official website confirmed.

Located at the foot of Gellért Hill in the Buda district, the Gellért complex is a historic Art Nouveau masterpiece built between 1912 and 1918. It features a series of thermal pools fed by natural hot mineral springs, with temperatures ranging from 35–40°C. The mineral-rich water, containing calcium, magnesium, bicarbonates, chlorides, sulfates, and fluorides, is traditionally used to treat joint and back conditions, chronic inflammation, circulation issues, and respiratory problems.

Beyond its therapeutic offerings, the baths are a significant architectural attraction, adorned with Zsolnay ceramics, mosaics, columns, glass roofs, and other Art Nouveau decorative elements.

Gellért Baths welcome approximately 400,000 visitors annually, including many international tourists, making it the second most popular bath complex in Budapest, after the famous Széchenyi Baths.

The closure marks the start of a major restoration effort to preserve the historic structure and ensure the baths can continue to serve both locals and tourists for decades to come.
