China Introduces 30-day Visa-Free Travel for Russians

China has officially announced the introduction of a 30-day visa-free regime for Russians. The measure will initially be implemented on a trial basis for one year.

Experts estimate that the new rules could boost the flow of Russian tourists to China by 30–40%. The Russian Union of the Travel Industry noted that this step will make China as popular among Russian travelers as Turkey and Thailand.

Until now, travel between the two countries was possible under a group visa-free agreement, meaning Russians could only visit China as part of a tour group organized by a licensed operator. Additionally, visa-free entry was available for trips to Hainan Island and Hong Kong, while certain regions offered electronic visas. For most destinations, however, a standard visa had to be obtained through the embassy.

The new entry conditions remove one of the main barriers for tourists—the cost and complexity of obtaining a visa. According to the RUTI, this is particularly important for spontaneous trips and family holidays.

Meanwhile, Chinese citizens traveling to Russia can currently apply for an electronic visa just 48 hours before arrival or enter visa-free as part of an organized tourist group of at least five people.
