Aircraft Hits Beijing’s Tallest Building – CITIC Tower

A small aircraft crashed into Beijing’s tallest skyscraper, CITIC Tower, on Friday evening, triggering an emergency evacuation and a large-scale police response in the Chinese capital.

The aircraft, described by eyewitnesses as being about the size of a car, struck the upper section of the 108-storey tower, also known as China Zun, which serves as the headquarters of the state-owned CITIC Group. Two glass panels on a high floor were damaged by the impact.

Debris fell near the entrance to the building, prompting an immediate evacuation as emergency services and police sealed off the surrounding area. Authorities have not yet released official information regarding casualties or the cause of the crash.

Police Restrict Access

Witnesses reported a heavy police presence around the skyscraper, with nearby roads closed to traffic. Officers prevented bystanders from taking photographs and, according to Reuters witnesses, instructed some people to delete images they had already captured while directing the public away from the scene.

Videos and images circulating before being removed from Chinese social media appeared to show the aircraft lodged in the side of the building and wreckage scattered on the ground below.

Investigation Underway

No official explanation has yet been provided regarding how the aircraft entered Beijing’s tightly controlled airspace. Emergency responders remained at the scene as investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
