American Airlines and Qantas Strengthen Australia–U.S. Routes This Winter

American Airlines flights to Australia are expanding this winter in partnership with Qantas, giving travelers more options to connect between the United States and Australia’s major cities. Starting December 5 through the end of January 2026, American Airlines will launch three weekly flights between Los Angeles (LAX) and Brisbane (BNE).

Qantas is also increasing its schedule during the same period. From December 3 through January’s end, the airline will offer daily flights between Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Melbourne (MEL), building on a route that first launched in 2022. Qantas will also operate all DFW–Sydney (SYD) flights using its Airbus A380 aircraft beginning in January, adding comfort and capacity on one of the region’s most in-demand routes.

This transpacific expansion is part of the ongoing joint business partnership between American and Qantas, now in its fourth year. Together, the two airlines are working to improve air travel between the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. Their goal: to offer more seamless connections for travelers visiting family, heading on vacation, or exploring one of the most picturesque corners of the world.

Steve Johnson, American’s vice chair and chief strategy officer, said the airline is proud to increase travel options to Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne in cooperation with Qantas. Cam Wallace, Qantas Group CEO of International, emphasized the continued value the partnership brings to global customers and the growing demand from U.S. travelers for Australian destinations.

For Brisbane, the newest route means increased connectivity with up to seven weekly flights to and from Los Angeles shared between the two airlines. Meanwhile, daily flights from DFW to Melbourne enhance the reach of Qantas’s domestic network across Australia — including connections to more remote or lesser-known destinations.

With the added services, both airlines are doubling down on convenience for travelers on either side of the Pacific. Passengers in the U.S. can expect more one-stop options to Australia’s biggest cities, while Australians will enjoy smoother return trips or extended travel into the U.S. interior.

This seasonal increase in service comes as Australia remains a top long-haul destination for Americans, with high demand for travel during the Northern Hemisphere winter and Southern Hemisphere summer.
