Hawaiian Airlines has rolled out a game-changing policy for sports enthusiasts: surfboards, bicycles, and other sports equipment will now be treated as standard checked baggage, eliminating extra fees on all flights.
Recognizing Hawaii’s status as a premier surfing destination, the airline appears to be catering to its adventurous travelers—and perhaps smoothing over the long-standing tension between surfers and luggage handlers.
Under the new policy, travelers can check items like golf clubs, surfboards, and bikes for the same cost as a regular checked bag. This applies to all destinations served by Hawaiian Airlines, including Asia, Oceania, and the continental United States.
“Hawaii is synonymous with surfing and many ocean and land-based activities that draw visitors from around the world,” said Sandra Wang, the airline’s product manager. “We are excited to extend this new benefit to our visitors and kama‘āina, so they can enjoy their favorite sports and hobbies while exploring Hawaii and beyond.”
For surfers, the policy brings cautious optimism. The history of surfboards emerging from baggage claim with unplanned “customizations” may have some holding their breath. However, the decision signals a commitment to improving the travel experience for the island’s beloved community of wave riders and sports enthusiasts.
