Damascus International Airport has suspended all operations following the reported collapse of the Syrian government and the fall of the capital city to rebel forces overnight. Sham FM, a local radio station, reported Sunday that the airport was evacuated, with all flights halted indefinitely.
Flight tracking platform Flightradar24 confirmed the airport’s closure, showing no aircraft departing or landing in Damascus.
The closure marks a significant escalation in the unrest that has plagued Syria for over a decade. While many regional airlines ceased operations to Syria years ago due to the ongoing conflict, Cham Wings, a private Syrian airline, and Syrian Air, the state-owned carrier, had continued limited services.
