Nestled in the historic Piazza della Minerva, just steps from the Pantheon, Orient Express La Minerva is poised to debut in Spring 2025 as the first hotel under the iconic Orient Express brand. Formerly known as Palazzo Fonseca, the property dates back to the 17th century and occupies an entire island site in the heart of Rome. Acquired in 2021 by Arsenale SpA, the building has undergone a meticulous restoration under the direction of Franco-Mexican architect and designer Hugo Toro.
“This milestone proudly marks the long-anticipated arrival of our first Orient Express hotel – Orient Express La Minerva,” said Gilda Perez-Alvarado, CEO of Orient Express. “Nestled in the heart of Rome, it is not only a destination for discerning travelers seeking exceptional experiences but also a place for Romans to come together. Here, Orient Express meets the soul of the Eternal City, creating a unique space where stories are shared, and cultures converge.”
Built in 1620 as the residence of the aristocratic Portuguese Fonseca family, the property was later transformed into a hotel by the French Sauve family in 1811. It became a popular destination for Grand Tour travelers, hosting luminaries such as Stendhal, Vittorio Alfieri, and Herman Melville, and even Pope Pius IX. The restoration artfully blends the grandeur of Roman domus with Art Déco elegance, reflecting the Orient Express’ spirit of sophisticated travel.
Guests can unwind at La Minerva Bar, a tribute to the Roman goddess of art and craftsmanship, beneath the building’s historic skylight. For elevated dining, the Voliera rooftop restaurant and bar serves Mediterranean cuisine alongside panoramic views of the Eternal City’s landmarks, including Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Altare della Patria. The hotel’s spa channels the ancient rituals of Roman baths, while event spaces like the Olimpo Ballroom feature exquisite Murano chandeliers and marble statues by Canova’s disciple, Rinaldo Rinaldi.
Orient Express La Minerva offers 93 opulent rooms, including 36 suites and 4 Signature Suites with breathtaking views of the Pantheon and Piazza della Minerva. Rooms start at €1,000 per night, including breakfast, with Signature Suites ranging from €3,500 to €15,000.
