Thailand’s Airports Authority (AoT) is set to introduce biometric identification technology at six of the kingdom’s busiest airports, enhancing the travel experience with facial recognition systems starting November 1, 2024, for domestic passengers and December 1 for international travelers. The automated facial recognition system will allow passengers to move seamlessly from check-in to boarding without needing to present documents multiple times. Passengers will only need to show their passports once, at the check-in counter.
The technology will be rolled out across major international airports, including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai.
Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand’s primary air hub, handled 60 million passengers in the fiscal year 2024 (October 2023 – September 2024), making it the busiest airport in the country. It’s followed by Bangkok’s Don Mueang with 29.15 million passengers, and Phuket with 16.4 million travelers.
