Climate Activists Disrupt Operations at Major German Airports

Over the past few years, climate activists in Western European countries, especially in Germany, have increasingly resorted to more radical actions to draw attention to environmental issues. German airports have often been targets of these demonstrations.

On July 25, 2024, climate activists from the movement Letzte Generation (“Last Generation”) managed to paralyze operations at Frankfurt am Main Airport, Germany’s largest and one of the world’s busiest transit hubs, for several hours. According to Spiegel, several demonstrators gained access to the airport grounds and glued themselves to the runway, leading to the suspension of flights for several hours, as reported by the federal police press office.

This incident follows another disruption just a day earlier on July 24, 2024, when activists from the same group halted operations at Cologne/Bonn Airport, Germany’s sixth-largest by passenger volume. Early in the morning, five individuals entered the airport and glued themselves to the runway, causing significant delays.

The recent actions of Letzte Generation highlight the ongoing and escalating efforts of climate activists in Germany to emphasize the urgency of environmental issues.
