Smoking Areas in Russian Airports: Where Can You Light Up?

After a long hiatus, smoking areas started making a comeback in Russian airports in 2021. During this time, technology has advanced, but the progress hasn’t been consistent across all airports. Which Russian airports have smoking areas?

Smoking Areas in Moscow Airports

In the Moscow aviation hub, you can only smoke after completing all pre-flight formalities in Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports. Smoking at Domodedovo is restricted to designated outdoor areas, and it’s not even allowed in the business lounge.

At Sheremetyevo Airport, there’s a dedicated smoking area available for all passengers. It’s relatively spacious compared to other Russian airports, but Sheremetyevo is a large airport, so according to eyewitnesses, it can get crowded, and there might not always be enough space for everyone. You can find this smoking area in Terminal V near Gate 117, where you can also get a cup of coffee (there’s a vending machine) and charge your phone.

Vnukovo Airport has four small smoking cabins located in different parts of the domestic and international departure halls. These cabins are quite convenient and modern, equipped with good ventilation. However, they are designed to accommodate up to eight people, which can become a challenge during busy times. While responsible passengers tend not to exceed three to four people at a time, there can still be small queues.

St. Petersburg

Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg provides a smoking area that’s almost outdoors. It’s located on the third floor of the domestic departure hall, just past the beer restaurant. While the structure might not be very aesthetically pleasing, it still offers decent ventilation.

Sochi

In Sochi, there’s a small and charming outdoor smoking area in the inner courtyard of the airport, near a fountain where you can grab a coffee. Access to this area is available after the check-in process.

Novosibirsk

For transit and registered passengers, Tolmachevo Airport in Novosibirsk has a designated smoking room. In contrast, Kazan Airport allows smoking only for passengers on international flights. However, their room is quite spacious, accommodating up to 12 people, although the merits of this feature are questionable when it comes to smoking.

Yekaterinburg

Koltsovo Airport in Yekaterinburg provides quite comfortable smoking rooms. Two of them are located in the business lounges, but even regular travelers with a nicotine craving have access to equipped smoking areas.

Smoking Areas in Other Regions

Smoking rooms are available in clean zones of airports in Ufa, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok, and Surgut. Interestingly, even though the airport’s website states otherwise, there is a smoking room at Roshchino Airport in Tyumen, located beyond the pre-flight formalities area (past the souvenir kiosks).

However, smoking is prohibited at Mineralnye Vody Airport. Even on the platform outside the terminal, vigilant staff ensures that passengers maintain a distance of 15 meters from the entrance. Smoking is also not allowed at Kaliningrad’s Khrabrovo Airport. Smoking rooms are still missing in airports in Omsk, Tomsk, Saratov, Nizhnekamsk, Volgograd, Makhachkala, Vladikavkaz, and Grozny.
