Currently, the Ministry of Finance and the Tax Administration of Egypt are finalizing the implementation of Tax Free for foreign tourists at the country’s airports. Currently, the Tax Free system is already working at Sharm el-Sheikh airport, as the UN climate change summit is being held there.
Foreign tourists can reclaim VAT if their stay in Egypt does not exceed three months, the value of purchases is at least 1,500 Egyptian pounds, there is an electronic receipt for the purchase with passport details, and the product itself or the label has a Tax Free stamp.
Signs in different languages have already appeared at Sharm el-Sheikh airport, and employees of the airport, hotels and markets are explaining to tourists how to return VAT. The standard Tax Free rate on most non-food items is 14%.
Processing the refund takes up to 45 days.
