Egypt To Launch Digital Visa-On-Arrival System At Cairo Airport

Egypt is preparing to introduce a new digital visa-on-arrival system designed to modernise airport entry procedures and reduce waiting times for international travellers.

The new programme is scheduled to launch in August 2026 across all terminals at Cairo International Airport before gradually expanding to other airports throughout the country.

Under the new system, traditional visa stickers placed inside passports will be replaced by electronic QR codes.

Travellers Will Be Able To Apply Digitally

According to Egyptian authorities, visitors will be able to obtain their visas through multiple digital channels.

Applications can be completed using self-service kiosks located in airport arrival areas, through the official online platform or via a dedicated mobile application.

Travellers will need to enter their passport details, pay the visa and service fees online and then receive a personalised QR code for presentation at border control.

The government also confirmed that visas may be issued up to 48 hours before arrival in Egypt or arranged through travel agencies.

Project Backed By Technology And Banking Partners

The agreement to implement the new digital visa system was signed with the involvement of technology company Cy Shield Technology alongside banking partners National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernise Egypt’s tourism infrastructure and improve the arrival experience for international visitors.

Authorities Aim To Reduce Airport Queues

Egyptian officials say the primary goal of the programme is to speed up border procedures and reduce congestion at airports.

Authorities also hope the digital system will simplify the visa process and make travel to Egypt more convenient for tourists.

The country remains one of the Middle East and North Africa’s largest tourism markets, welcoming millions of international visitors annually to destinations including Cairo, the Red Sea resorts and historical sites along the Nile.

The transition to digital visas reflects a growing global trend as airports and governments increasingly adopt contactless and technology-driven border control systems.
