Russian Railways Passenger Traffic Increased by 5%

According to the latest figures, in March 2021 the infrastructure of Russian Railways carried 85.9 million passengers, 4.8% more than in the same month last year. Suburban passenger numbers amounted to 79.4 million, an increase of 5.1%, while long-distance passengers rose to 6.5 million, up 0.9%.

Passenger turnover in March 2021 amounted to 6.8 billion passenger-kilometres, 5.2% less than in the same month in 2020. Suburban passenger turnover was 2.4 billion pass-km, an increase of 3.3%, while long-distance passenger turnover fell to 4.4 billion pass-km, a decrease of 9.2%.

In total, 221.9 million passengers travelled in January-March 2021, 14.3% less than in the first quarter of 2020. Long-distance passenger numbers in January-March 2021 amounted to 17.5 million, a decline of 22.2%, while suburban passengers amounted to 204.4 million, down 13.6%.

Passenger turnover on the Russian Railways network since the beginning of 2021 decreased by 24.4% compared to the first quarter of the previous year and amounted to 18.4 billion pass-km. Suburban passenger turnover in the first quarter fell to 6 billion pass-km, a decline of 16.3%, while long-distance passenger turnover was down to 12.4 billion pass-km, a fall of 27.8%.
