Night Buses in Madrid Will Stop on Demand

In the Autonomous Community of Madrid, which, in addition to the Spanish capital, includes several dozen other cities, night buses will stop on demand. This opportunity can be used by women, children, and teens. This will protect their way home in the dark, by reducing the distance from the stop to the front door.

Innovation will come into effect from the end of September. At the beginning of the year, the new scheme was tested on 6 bus routes. In 95% of cases, women asked for an additional stop.

Similar measures to prevent violence on the streets are in effect in other European cities. For example, in Paris, city buses on some routes have stopped on demand at night since 2018.

The Ile-de-France region adopted this initiative so that passengers (primarily women) can get home faster at night and are less likely to become victims of violence.
